The Lifestyle: Audi Prologue Piloted Driving Concept Reveals

After watching the autonomous A7 drive itself from San Fran to Las Vegas, Audi has unveiled yet another self-driving concept at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. Dubbed the Prologue Piloted Driving Concept, the car is based off the original Prologue that debuted in LA last year but comes packing an autonomous driving system. Using a combination of video cameras, radar sensors, a laser scanner and ultrasound sensors, the information gathered is fed into a central controller known as a zFAS, enabling the model to drive itself.

Under the skin rests a powertrain that is entirely to our liking—one befitting an upper-tier luxury coupe. Audi’s nearly ubiquitous twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 makes 605 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque here, and an overboost function increases the latter figure to 553 lb-ft for short bursts. Output is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed torque-converter automatic. The sprint from zero to 62 mph takes a claimed 3.7 seconds, and we assume that the forward thrust is ruthlessly curtailed at the usual 155-mph top-speed threshold.

The construction, being of both aluminum and steel, is the only thing hybridized here; the body and the decision to go with a conventional powertrain help keep weight to a stated 4365 pounds. (Converted to metric, this means the car comes in 20 kilograms under the psychologically important 2000-kilo mark.) All-wheel steering—a technology that tends to wax and wane as decades roll by—is said to help agility, and roadholding is ensured by 285/30 Pirelli P Zero rubber wrapped around 22-inch wheels. Carbon-ceramic brakes are part of the package, too.

Going beyond the stylistic flourishes that will inform future Audi models, our educated guess is that the Prologue concept previews a future production A8-based coupe. If such a car materializes, it will look like this—and it will be called the A10.
